Incorporating the Montessori Method

At Little Learners, we do not claim to be a Montessori Nursery, nor do we profess to know it all about the Montessori approach. However, through experience, and what we do know about the approach, we have picked what we consider to be the ‘best bits’ and incorporate them into our own child-centred approach, mainly focused around the Reggio Approach. This is simply because we want the best for the children in our care and we continually reflect on our practice and look at new ways and initiatives to enhance children’s learning and development.

Aspects of the Montessori Approach that we appreciate and acknowledge include:

  • teaching children manners and helping them to gain a level of grace and courtesy
  • allowing children quality time to engage in activities and experiences in order for the brain to be stimulated and fully focused - allowing stronger connections to be made
  • recognising that children need independence to learn and develop
  • providing sensorial activities that are crucial to embedding children’s learning and development
  • providing a method of self correction, so that children do not always have to rely on an adult.

Specific, selected Montessori equipment and resources are provided within our setting, which encourage self-directed learning, a valued commitment of the Reggio Approach as well as Little Learners Childcare.

Self-directed learning is so important for young children, because we are all born with unlimited potential to be or to do whatever we want. So when you look at it that way – why should adults direct children’s learning and development in a way that could limit their potential, and consequently embed a sense of worthlessness to children!? We need to look at what children are telling and showing us, and allow their independence to lead their learning.

Through the use of specific Montessori equipment and approaches children will develop their skills and expertise in practical life experiences, language and Mathematical development and cultural knowledge and understanding all embedded with sensorial learning experiences, which Maria Montessori believes to spark stronger brain connections. These learning techniques and opportunities compliment and support the Early Years Foundation Stage and The Reggio Approach.
